UFC 100 Weigh-In Results
We are finally one day away from what is one of if not the biggest event in mixed martial arts history. UFC 100 will kick off tomorrow night from the MandalayBayEventsCenter in Las Vegas. The card is stacked with two championship fights and its time we take a look at how one of those fights will play out.
#2 welterweight in the world Thiago Alves looks to stop the #1 welterweight in the world and one of the top pound for pound fighters in the world, UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.
Alves is a different kind of welterweight. The UFC is dubbing him as ‘bigger, stronger and younger.’ He cuts down from around 220 – 235 lbs and will weigh in at 170 but enter the cage around 200 lbs. In his fight against Matt Hughes, Alves was clearly the bigger fighter even appearing to be almost a weight class ahead of Hughes.
Alves’ strength and powerful striking will pose a new challenge for GSP. Alves has a 16-4 fight record with five of his last seven wins coming by KO or TKO in the second round. He has decisive wins over Matt Hughes, Karo Parisyan, Josh Koscheck and Chris Lytle. In short Alves has proven that he is for real and he is a threat to GSP’s welterweight title reign.
Georges St. Pierre needs no introduction. He is the top welterweight in the world and one of the fighters in the world period. The question is no longer ‘can GSP retain his title?’ it is ‘can [insert fighter name] beat GSP for the championship?’ When GSP regained the welterweight title against Matt Serra we thought ‘this guy is pretty good.’ When he pounded Jon Fitch for 25 minutes we thought ‘GSP is for real.’ When BJ Pen didn’t even answer the call for the fifth round of their fight it was clear that not only it he one of the best, he is that much better than the next guy in line.
I look for GSP to test Alves’ gas tank and make it wrestling match for the first round or two and then in the third when Alves is tired GSP will out strike him on his way to victory. St. Pierre will win this with a superior game plan and prove once again, he is that good.
We can only hope that this win will eventually lead to fight against Anderson Silva.
